How to update your Nexus 4 to the new Android 5.0 Lollipop

Android L the latest version of Android announced at Google I/O 2014 in late June,promises groundbreaking visual and functionality changes to the fast-aging Android operating system, offering up access the latest developer update of android L on Nexus 5 and Nexus 7.for Nexus 4 There is no Android L Preview system images available,but doesn't mean to wait and do nothing about it. Yes, Android L can be installed on the Nexus 4 and first-gen Nexus 7.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide on “How to update your Nexus 4 to Android L ?”.This is not an official update to android L for Nexus 5 from Google.So, it may have some bugs when you finish the update.Let's find out!

What You Need 1/2

  • Rooted Nexus 4 (2012) running Android 4.4.4 kitkat
  • Latest TWRP/CWM custom Recovery
  • Backup all apps+data using Titanium Backup / root.

What You Need 2/2

Download the latest beta release L from here : Github

How to step by step

Step 1 : Put the downloaded Android L .zip onto your Internal Storage
Step 2 : Reboot into Recovery(CWM/TWRP) – Volume down + Power button.
Step 3 : “wipe cache”
Step 4 : “advanced” -> “wipe dalvik cache”
Step 5 : “install zip” -> “install zip from sdcard” -> choose the [filename.zip] and confirm flashing procedure
Step 6 : “wipe cache”
Step 7 : “advanced” -> “wipe dalvik cache”
Step 8 : “reboot into system”

Step 9 : and Done ! The updating to Android L process may take up to 5 Minutes or more.!

Bugs ?


While this is just an unofficial update,the official one isn't ready yet.Here is a list of bugs I found while using the new Android L on my friend's Nexus 4.These bugs aren't big one, also the ROM is rooted.
  • Camera –
  • Wifi – Icon doesn’t go off .
  • Recent apps – sometimes the app preview is hidden.
  • Navigation bar : Home and recent apps button will disappears. But a reboot will fix this.
  • Headsup Notifications : while receiving call the both buttons accept and declinearen’t responding .
